We are starting our Catholic Schools Week service project this week and we're excited to have you join us! We are collecting new socks, hats, and gloves for Frederick area shelters. The Maryland Coalition of Families for Frederick County will be distributing the donations. Please send in your contribution if you are able by February 3rd and helps us WARM A HEART!

Re-Enrollment Begins JANUARY 13; FACTS financial aid opens JANUARY 1

Re-enrollment for current families opens Jan 13 and closes Feb 13; new family registration opens Feb 14.

FACTS financial aid process begins on Jan 1. You MUST submit a FACTS application if you wish to be considered for MSS tuition assistance, scholarships, and AOB tuition assistance. The largest aid awards will go to those families who complete their application by Jan 22. Subsequent rounds will have less to offer.

Girls and Adult Loved Ones: The MSS Home and School Association invites you to GLOW CRAZY for our first Girls Night Out. Come on out and dance the night away under the black lights! Tickets are $20 for 1 adult, 1 child couple. $10 for each additional guest. Refreshments and glow sticks for everyone! Photos available ($5) and may be purchased at the dance or ahead of time.

A Message From the Principal

Dear Families,

I hope this note finds you and your family healthy and well.

Interims will go home with students next week. Please review the report with your child and contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

On Sunday, January 29, we begin Catholic Schools Week (CSW). Since 1974, beginning on the last Sunday in January, Catholic schools have been celebrated in the United States. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops recognizes that:

“Catholic schools are unique expressions of the Church’s effort to achieve the purposes of Catholic education among the young and are recognized as the best opportunity to realize the fourfold purpose of Catholic education – to provide an atmosphere in which the Gospel message is proclaimed, community in Christ is experienced, service to our sisters and brothers is the norm, and thanksgiving and worship are cultivated.”

Please see the schedule of events for Catholic Schools Week below for information on how we will live the Bishops’ statement in next week’s celebrations. We begin with our Warm a Heart Service Project to collect socks, hats, and gloves for Frederick shelters, which will run through February 3.

Cafeteria Update

Due to the rising cost of milk, among other food supplies, we have had to make the difficult decision to raise the cost of milk from $0.10 to $0.35. The price of a full lunch with milk will also increase from $3.25 to $3.60. This will begin on January 30th.

CALENDAR REMINDERS

February 3 and February 17 are half-days (noon dismissal). There will be NO AFTER SCHOOL CARE on Feb 3.

February 13 is NO SCHOOL (Staff retreat).

February 20 is NO SCHOOL in observance of Presidents Day.

The At-a-Glance calendar has been updated to reflect the change on Feb 17 from No School to Noon Dismissal. Please remember, these dates are subject to change and you should consult Tuesday News or the online calendar for current event information.

Catholic Schools Week 2023 - MSS: Strenghtening Hearts and Minds

January 30-February 3

We have an exciting week planned for Catholic Schools Week this year! This year's CSW service project will benefit homeless shelters in Frederick County and will run from January 23-February 3. We are collecting socks, hats, and gloves which will be delivered to the shelters by the Maryland Coalition for Families. VIEW FLIER

We Love MSS Because...

Look for a pink heart in your child's Tuesday folder! We are asking our families to fill out the heart with why you love MSS and return to school by January 27. We will be hanging them up in the hallways for Catholic Schools Week.

Have-a-Heart Volleyball Game

Our annual grade 8 vs the teachers volleyball game will be held on Friday, February 17. Grade 8 parents/guardians are welcome to attend, but please note there is very limited space in the gym.

Congratulations to the Donut Party winners for this last round of volunteering: Mrs. Schisler's K and Mr. Pace's grade 6 homerooms!

Mrs. Schisler won for lower elementary with 7 volunteers and Mr. Pace won for middle school with 13 volunteers!

The next round for the Donut Party prize will include games worked December 19 through January 26. The homerooms with the most volunteers will win a donut party. At the end of the season, the homeroom who had the most volunteers will win a Pizza and Ice Cream Party! Sign up today to help your child's class!

Kids Heart Challenge 2023

We kicked off this year's KIDS HEART CHALLENGE with a schoolwide assembly. Our event will run until 2/24. Get a head start and go online to register to take a challenge to Move More or Be Kind. Once you register you get a FREE torch wristband.

Advocacy Alert - BOOST Scholarship

Many of our families take advantage of the Maryland BOOST Scholarship program. This scholarship helps cover the cost of private school tuition for eligible families. The Maryland BOOST Coalition has sent this alert asking for help in ensuring there are funds for next year and beyond:

We have a challenge this year with uncertainty regarding whether BOOST will exist as we know it today. Special interests want it removed entirely from the state budget. We need you to send this email to state legislators today.

The Maryland General Assembly authorizes funding for our kids’ BOOST scholarships and the Governor of Maryland introduces the budget wherein BOOST is funded.

Governor Hogan has included this funding in his initial budget but now that there is a new Governor and many new members in the Senate and House, we need to educate these stakeholders on why BOOST is important to current students and those future generations who not only want, but need, these scholarships.

Maryland BOOST is currently funded at $10 million. The return on investment in kids through these programs cannot be understated. Please help us in having our voices heard!

Re-Enrollment Season Begins

It's that time of year to start thinking about re-enrollment! The system is open to current families only. Current families have until February 13 to re-enroll and receive the early bird discount on registration fees.

Enrollment opens to new families starting February 14; classroom spots cannot be guaranteed for returning families as of that date. FACTS financial aid application opens January 1st - this is REQUIRED for any family who wants to be considered for tuition assistance. To be considered for assistance in the first round (with the most available funds), please complete your application by January 22. All parishes in the AOB also require this to be completed to receive parish assistance.

For complete details, including the schedule of tuition and fees and important deadlines can be found on our Admissions page. An email will be going out to current families, as well. Questions about the process should be directed to Laurie Szukalski at admissions@mothersetonschool.org. Questions regarding financial aid or tuition should be directed to our finance department at finance@mothersetonschool.org.

SICK POLICY REMINDER - IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ

*Additional reminder: if your child has vomiting or nausea and is sent home from school, they should NOT RETURN THE NEXT DAY. Please follow the 24-hour rule as you would for fever or diarrhea.

There are many viruses going around, not the least of which are COVID, flu and RSV. Many of our students have already suffered illnesses. PLEASE, in order to keep our school healthy and to show consideration to other students, faculty, staff, and families, DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF THEY ARE TOO SICK TO TAKE PART IN NORMAL ACTIVITIES OR IF THEY HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

  • Fever at or above 100˚F
  • Vomiting or Nausea
  • Uncontrollable cold symptoms
    • persistent/disruptive cough
    • excessively runny nose
    • headaches/body aches
    • sore throat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Decrease or loss of taste or smell
  • Diarrhea
  • Undiagnosed rash
  • Green nasal discharge lasting longer than ten days or accompanied by fever/chills
  • Pinkeye

Since cold and flu symptoms can mimic COVID, please ensure your child has tested negative for COVID before sending them to school. We have at-home test kits for your convenience. Your pediatrician can also recommend a combination COVID-Flu-RSV home test kit if they believe it's necessary.

As a reminder, children must be fever- and diarrhea-free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medicine (Tylenol, Motrin, Immodium, etc.) before they can return to school.

If your child exhibits any of these symptoms at school, we will send them home. If your child must miss more than 3 days of school, we ask you to please bring a doctor's note upon their return to school.
