Attention all MSS Parents and families:

Mount St. Mary’s University Athletics and Mother Seton School Home and School Association (HSA) are teaming up this basketball season! The Mount is looking for adults, 16 years and older, to work as ushers at all of the women’s and men’s home basketball games. If you are able to volunteer, please sign up via the sign-up genius link. By volunteering, your children, spouse, or child sitter will get free tickets to that game.

By helping Mount Athletics you can help us raise up to $9,000 for Mother Seton School. In addition, if you are looking to satisfy your volunteer hours, ushering at the games counts!

A Message From The Principal

Dear Families,

I hope this note finds your family healthy and well.

The school nurses would like you to please review pages 37-38 of the Handbook regarding medication guidelines. Also, as the weather gets colder, please ensure your child has appropriate cold weather clothing. The students will be outside for recess and gym as much as possible. The cold weather uniform policy is in effect until April 15; shorts are not approved for wear.

While we all know November as a month of Thanksgiving and Remembrance, it is also a special month for Black Catholics. At a meeting at Fordham University in July 1990, the National Black Catholic Clergy of the United States voted to designate November as National Black Catholic History Month. Catholics around the country remember and celebrate the long history and proud heritage of Black Catholics.

I thought the following information on Mother Mary Lange, taken from USCCB.org, would be of interest to you:

Servant of God Mother Mary Lange (1784-1882) was born Elizabeth Lange, a native of the Caribbean and believed to be Cuban born of Haitian descent. She was the foundress and first Superior General of the Oblate Sisters of Providence (1829-1832), the first religious congregation of African American women in the history of the Catholic Church. On July 2, 1829, Elizabeth and three other women professed their vows and became the Oblate Sisters of Providence to educate and evangelize African Americans. They educated youth and provided a home for orphans. Freed slaves were educated and, at times, admitted into the congregation.

They nursed the terminally ill during the cholera epidemic of 1832, sheltered the elderly, and served as domestics at St. Mary’s Seminary. Mother Mary Lange practiced faith to an extraordinary degree. Her deep faith – in close union with Jesus – enabled her to persevere against all odds. She lived through disappointment and opposition until God called her home in 1882 at the St. Frances Convent in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1991, with the approval of the Holy See, Cardinal William Henry Keeler, Archbishop of Baltimore, officially opened a formal investigation of Lange’s life to study it for her possible canonization. Catholics, especially Baltimoreans, continue to petition for her sainthood.

Remember Mother Mary Lange in your prayers!

Have a blessed week,

Kathleen J. Kilty, PhD
Principal

WANDS FOR WILDLIFE - GREEN SCHOOL COLLECTION

As part of our Green School initiative, middle school science classes are collecting used mascara wands for wildlife!

The wands are shared with wildlife caregivers to use in providing care and treatment to wild animals. They use the wands in many ways including direct care of the animals and help with cleaning items like syringes.

Before you throw your mascara away, please clean off the wand and send it in to Mrs. Kuykendall (Mrs. K). One simple step to help wildlife and be a good steward of the earth!
