HISTORY

Mother Seton came to Emmitsburg, Maryland with the approval of Bishop Carroll and founded the Sisters of Charity, later to become the Daughters of Charity. This community of sisters dedicated their lives to helping the poor, nursing the sick and teaching children about the "Good News" of the Lord.

The gentle landscape in the rural town of Emmitsburg captured the heart and soul of Mother Seton. She called this place "my valley", and her sojourn here marked our history with an indelible stamp of Christian spirituality. Mother Seton's inclusion of religious values with formal education was the inspiration behind opening our nation's first parochial school.

Mother Seton School, sponsored by the Daughters of Charity, traces its roots to that little school established on February 20, 1810 in Emmitsburg by Elizabeth Ann Seton. St. Joseph's House, later known as "The White House", was a log dwelling where Mother Seton offered a quality Catholic education both for student boarders and day scholars from the neighborhood. Three children from the Valley comprised the first student body.

Mother Seton School, nestled on 14 ½ acres of campus, is home to a quality Catholic education (Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 8) including a Spanish Language Program, Computer Lab, Music and Art Curriculum, community service, and a strong sense of spirituality reflected in our school liturgies and prayer partner activities. Students also enjoy new facilities such as a state-of-the-art Science Lab, multipurpose room, new Kindergarten classrooms and play area, and Pre-Kindergarten room.

Nearly 30,000 children have been enriched by the faith-centered education taught in "my valley". More than 125 Daughters of Charity have given their lives to the ministry of educating these young children. Several generations and expansions later Mother Seton School has become the vision of education as seen by our Foundress, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton.

Mother Seton School affirms the truth that the goal of all Catholic education is salvation in Jesus Christ. Our mission is to clearly and fully transmit the message of the Gospel as reflected in the life of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, our Foundress. We strive to instill in our students an ability to apply Gospel values in all aspects of their life experiences.

Ever present in the minds of the staff are opportunities to nurture conscience formation. We are guided in this process by the Core Values of Vincentian Education, which are holistic, integrated, creative, flexible, excellent in teaching and methodology, person-oriented, collaborative, and focused. We help the students to internalize Catholic Christian values, which help them make good moral choices.

Mother Seton School reflects the spirit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and her mission. All administration, faculty, staff, and students are respected and valued. We believe a mutually supportive environment is conducive to the success of the student. Teachers, staff, and parents are active role models for our students and are partners in Catholic education.

We integrate the intellectual, spiritual, moral, and physical needs of our students in a Catholic setting. Efforts are made to help each child develop his or her potential through the acquisition of basic skills and the achievement of independence in learning. We strive to equip students to be lifelong learners.
