I recently read a Lenten reflection on two interpretations of the phrase, Give it up for God!
We are familiar with the most common meaning ...During Lent we give up something for God by fasting or almsgiving And as our scripture for this week states, if we do this with humility, God will repay us.
The second interpretation is less commonly mentioned in relation to Lent. We've all heard a speaker ask an audience to give it up for an athlete or performer or scholar who has accomplished something great, or beautiful or powerful. During Lent can we all intentionally "Give it up for God." ...meaning applaud God for his good deeds, his kindness, his repayment a hundredfold for our feeble efforts to do good.
As the psalmist prays so eloquently
"Praise the Lord for he is good Sing praise to our God, for he is gracious It is fitting to praise him." (Psalm 147:1)
Each day, let's give it up for God! Through praise, fasting, and almsgiving!
Happy Lent!
